Walt Weiss was selected as the 10th round of the 1982 amateur draft for the Baltimore Orioles. He decided to attended University of North Carolina. 3 years later, he was drafted again, this time for the Oakland Athletics during the very first round, as the 11th overall pick in the 1985 draft. He made his first major league appearance together with the Athletics in September 1987. While with the team, they won the World Series in 1989. Weiss was traded to Florida Marlins in 1992 and played for 158 matches. He moved to Colorado Rockies in 1994 and posted a career high of 8 homeruns with 48 RBIs. Weiss played for Atlanta Braves during the remaining years of his career. He retired in 2000. After his retirement, he became the special educator and advisor of the Rockies from 2002 to 2008. He was the head varsity coach of Regis Jesuit High School baseball team. Four years later, Walt became the manager of Colorado Rockies on November 7, 2012.
