After graduating from Harvard College, Lee began working at L.F. Rothschildas an analyst. Beginning in 1966, Lee worked for First National Bank of Boston for 8 long years until he served the place as Vice President. In 1974, he founded Thomas H. Lee Partners (THL), which will be considered as one of the largest and oldest private equity firms in the world now. He now serves as Lee Equity Partners’ managing partner.

During its early years, THL purchased Sterling Jewelers for only $28 million. A couple of years after, Lee sold Sterling Jewelers for $210 million, earning him a gain amounting to $180 million. In 1992, the business acquired Snapple Beverages and after a couple of years, he sold it to Quaker Oats for a staggering sum of $1.7 billion. Reports claimed that Lee and his investors earned around $900 million for that one deal.
