Stephen Girard bought most of the stocks from First Bank of the United States. He started his own bank, Girard’s Bank. He hired First Bank’s cashier, George Simpson, as cashier of the brand new bank. Through the War of 1812, Girard’s Bank proved to be a main supply of government credit. Following the war, Girard became a big stockholder in and among the managers of the Second Bank of America. He’s married to Mary Lum, and had a daughter named Mary who died several months after she was born. He expired on December 26, 1831 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA.
