Cohen was involved with the student council in his school days and loved to study music and poetry. As a teen, he began learning guitar and formed his own group called “Buckskin Boys”. Cohen loved to hang out at Saint-Laurent Boulevard, where he and his friends went for pleasure and eating. Cohen was the President of McGill Debating Union and published his first group of poems in the magazine CIV/n. Cohen graduated from the McGill University using a BA degree.

Cohen was greatly affected by the works of WB Yeats, Henry Miller and Walt Whitman. In 1956, his first book of poetry “let’s Compare Mythologies” was released. Cohen left New York and returned to Montreal, striving his hands in many things in once, however not losing out on his focus which was composing. Throughout the 1960s, he preferred to keep a low profile, but continued to write poems and fiction short stories. Gradually, Cohen began publishing less quantity of novels — the gap began increasing. In a single interview in 1998, he described his writing as “like a bear stumbling into a beehive or a honey cache: I am stumbling right into it and getting stuck, and it is delicious also it is horrifying and that I’m in it and it is not too graceful also it is quite awkward plus it is very distressing and yet there’s something inevitable about it.”

In 2011, he was granted the prestigious Prince of Asturias Award because of his contribution to literature.
