Lawrence Harvey Zeiger was born in Brooklyn, NY on November 19, 1933. His parents were Jewish immigrants. His dad, Edward Zeiger, was a tavern owner. His mother, Jennie Gitlitz was a garment worker. Disaster struck the family when Edward died from heart disease when Larry was just nine years of age. Larry had visions to become a radio personality from a young age, however he was influenced greatly in the passing of his dad. He lost interest in school and just graduated high school. After high school Larry worked in the post office to assist support his mom.

Larry learned that there is a growing media market in Florida and stations were hiring inexperienced broadcasters. In 1957, Larry got a potential for a life when a radio announcer leave. He was instantly hired to assume the morning programs. He also did the day sportscasts and newscasts for the station. The station supervisor suggested Larry that his last name Zeiger was overly ethnic and difficult to keep in mind. Larry determined to professionally go by Larry King after hearing an ad for King’s Wholesale Spirits.
During the 1960s King gained major popularity in the South Florida marketplace. He had a radio show, a Miami television program, and given to the Miami Herald. He was badly in debt and his public image was destroyed. He worked for years to reconstruct his career to the West Coast. King’s radio show captured the eye of media mogul, Ted Turner. Turner hired King to host his own talk show to the then-enduring CNN station. Larry King Live debuted in 1985 and stayed on air for 25 years.
