John is best known as the writer of the 1999 book Common Sense in Mutual Funds: New Imperatives for the Intelligent Investor. The book became a best seller and is considered a classic. John Clifton Bogle was born on May 8, 1929 in Verona, New Jersey. He also attended evening and weekend classes in the University of Pennsylvania. John then went to work for Walter L. Morgan at Wellington Management Company. Also referred to as Jack, he founded The Vanguard Group in 1974. Also known worked his way to grow the company to function as the second-largest mutual fund business on earth.
