In 1983, he was decided by the Detroit Red Wings during the next round of the NHL Entry Draft. Probert spent playing together with the team until 1994. In 1989, he served three months in jail when he was detained for drug possession. He moved to Chicago Blackhawks in 1994. Probert was put under inactive status due to entering rehabilitation and different injuries that he endured during his stint with all the team. On November 16, 2002, he was unofficially retired from playing ice hockey and finally declared his retirement through the 2003 off-season.
